Chapter 15

I had ideas floating around my head, as well as on paper. They had, admittedly, been more general, but it was not a hard stretch to mold them into ideas that would fit our oncoming plight and the enemy that sought to do us harm.

We already had a moat. Kea and I, after having got hot and heavy in a deserted alleyway, had made that one evening. To me, this was already an excellent first step in protecting ourselves against any more infernal creatures that might be on their way.

“I don’t know what kind of crazy creatures and monsters this Chossara chick is going to be sending our way,” I said to Lilah the day after the Council meeting, “but I’d guess they’d be fiery things, right?”

Lilah shrugged and leaned over the kitchen table to look at all the plans and diagrams I had laid out on sheets of paper and parchment. The scent of her was refreshing, familiar and comforting; pine trees, sap, and forest flowers.

“I don’t know, Jake,” she said, catching me gazing at her and grinning knowingly. She gave me a nudge with her elbow. “You, Cotu, Kea, and Nelri faced them. Not me.”

I nodded, turning my eyes back to the plans on the table.

“I would have thought that a bunch of elves styling themselves infernal elves, who had already sent a wave of fire golems up to the surface from…” I waved my hand around, “wherever the fuck they were hiding out, they might be inclined to send more fire-based creatures at us, would you say?”

Lilah nodded. “It would be a fair guess. Although, even with all these volcanoes, noxious hot springs, and lakes of fire that our scouts are reporting, there is still a chance that this infernal she-elf might send subterranean beasts too.”

“That,” I said, “is a good point.”

I tapped the sheet of paper directly in front of me. It was a large and semi-detailed map of Varglade. The river was marked in blue ink, winding out of the forest, through the culvert in the barrier hedge on the northern edge of the town, through the township, and then out through another culvert in the eastern wall.

“The river acts as a moat for the east and southern side of the town before flowing away toward the sea,” I said.

“Correct,” Lilah said.

“We need it to encircle the entire township,” I said. “Deep, freezing channels of water… That’ll slow anything down, I don’t care what it’s made of.”

Lilah nodded. “How do you mean to go about it?”

I tapped the top section of the map where the river entered through the northern culvert.

“Just a bit of good old fashioned digging, I suppose. We split the river up here. First though, we dig a course for it around here,” and I indicated the western slope of the dell that Varglade nestled in, “using the steepness of the western bank to make a natural, and probably quite unstable cliff.”

“I see,” Lilah said approvingly. “And we loop it down
